Rooted in Heritage, Growing in Grace
Our journey began in October 1897, when Rev. Braxton gathered a group of believers on North 9th Street in Griffin. What started as a humble fellowship grew into a spiritual home that serves not only as a place of worship, but as a sanctuary for the weary and a catalyst for community change.
Through generations of leadership and unwavering commitment, we remain true to our vision: To extend the Kingdom of God throughout the world from Griffin, GA.
The Journey of Faith
October 1897
Our Foundation
Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church was established by Rev. Braxton with a group of faithful believers on North 9th Street in Griffin, Georgia.
1955
Rev. J.C. Smith & Youth Sunday
Rev. J.C. Smith became the twelfth pastor of Rising Star, and under his leadership the Youth Sunday initiative was launched.
1975
The Move to Cherry Street
The church purchased our current home at 132 West Cherry Street on July 26, 1975, and held the first services there on August 10, 1975.
1992
Investing in Education
Rising Star awarded its first college scholarships to graduating high school seniors, beginning a tradition of investing in our youth.
1995
Remodeling & Scouting
The church was remodeled, and Rising Star became the sponsor of Pack #107 — the first African American Boy Scout Troop in Griffin.
2004
A New Shepherd
Rev. Gerod Duff was called to pastor on December 31, 2003, and held his first official service in March 2004. That same year the church launched Empowerment Community Day.
2005
Serving Our Neighbors
The Community Resource Center was built and the Abundant Life Soup Kitchen was established, feeding our neighbors every weekday.
2010
Youth Summer Camp
Rising Star hosted its first Youth Summer Camp, creating a safe and enriching summer home for children in our community.
2012
Recognition of Service
Rev. Duff was recognized as an Outstanding Minister in Georgia, a testament to his faithful leadership and community impact.

Leading Rising Star since 2004, Pastor Duff and Lady Duff serve side by side — Lady Duff guiding our women's and youth ministries with a heart for the next generation.
